Privacy

This website does not track you, and neither does the Inklight app. The details:

The website

The site consists of static files: HTML, CSS and, on the Inklight page, a small script of Volary's own that plays the voice samples. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics or tracking scripts, has no forms, and loads nothing from third-party servers (no external fonts, scripts or images).

Hosting

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes the technical data that your browser sends with each request (IP address, time, requested page, browser type) in order to deliver the page and to protect the service. Volary runs no logging or statistics of its own on top of that. Cloudflare, Inc. is based in the United States and handles this data, and the weekly summary described below, on Volary's behalf; for the transfer to the US it relies on its certification under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, with the EU's standard contractual clauses as the fallback. The legal basis is Volary's legitimate interest in delivering the site and keeping it safe (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).

Email

If you write to info@volary.pro, your address and your message are stored in the company mailbox, which is hosted by Zoho Mail in an EU data center. They are used to answer you and to handle the matter you wrote about, on the basis of Volary's legitimate interest in answering its mail (Art. 6(1)(f)), or, where you write about a contract with Volary, to carry out that contract (Art. 6(1)(b)). Emails, the letters from Inklight below among them, are kept as long as the matter and any follow-up need them and then deleted; those that belong to the company's accounts are kept for the seven years Swedish bookkeeping law requires.

The Inklight app

Inklight collects no data unless you turn on the weekly summary below. Your books, your reading positions, your settings and the listening time counted for the free minutes stay on your device, and Volary receives none of it. The voice model and the narrators are downloaded from Hugging Face (huggingface.co); like any web host, Hugging Face sees your IP address and the files requested, and Inklight sends nothing else with those requests. A web article you import is fetched directly from the site you name. The downloads and the article fetch are needed to do what you ask the app for (Art. 6(1)(b)). Purchases go through Apple, which tells the app only which plan is active. Inklight has no ads and no account.

The weekly summary. If you turn it on (Inklight asks once, after your first hour of listening, and Settings changes it at any time), Inklight sends Volary an anonymous summary once a week: which narrator and speed you listened with most, roughly how long you listened, how far the week’s books are in broad bands, which ways you added books, which features you used, which plan you have (free, Candlelight or unlimited), how many narrators are on the device, the app and iOS version, the chip generation of the device, and how often the app was ended by a crash, for memory, by the system's watchdog or for using too much processor time. It holds no name, account, device identifier, book title, text or web address, and Settings shows exactly what is sent. It goes to volary.pro, which runs on Cloudflare; Cloudflare sees your IP address in transit as for any web request, and Volary stores none. The summaries are kept for three months and used only to improve Inklight. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time by turning the summary off in Settings; summaries sent before stay as they are. It is off unless you turn it on.

Letters to the maker. Inklight's Settings has a place to write a letter to the maker. The app sends nothing itself: the letter opens in your own mail app, addressed to report@volary.pro, and goes only when you send it there, from your own address. Unless you switch it off, a note on the state of the app goes with it, which you can read in full before sending: the app's version and your plan; the device model, iOS version, free space, memory, heat and display settings; which narrators are installed, and the narrator and speed in use; how many books of each format the library holds and, for the open book, its format and where you are in it as chapter and sentence numbers; the app's own log of the last 10 minutes; and the crash and hang reports iOS kept for Inklight. The note holds nothing from your books: no title, author, file name, text or web address. Letters arrive in the company mailbox described under Email above and are used to answer you and to fix what went wrong.

Screenshots. Inklight marks every screenshot you take in it with a faint pattern, too slight to see, that records the app's version and build, your iOS version, the kind of device and a few of your settings, such as the narrator, the speed, the text size and whether dark mode is on. It holds nothing that identifies you or your phone, and nothing about the books you read. The app sends nothing: the mark travels only with a screenshot you choose to send, and lets Volary see which version and settings a problem you report came from.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask which personal data Volary holds about you and get a copy, have it corrected or deleted, have its use restricted, object to a use that rests on Volary's legitimate interest, and receive the data you gave Volary in a machine-readable form to take elsewhere.
